One of the reasons the Australian Outback is a tourist location is because of its diverse species of unique animals.  In the Australian Outback, one might experience an encounter with dingos, emus, or kangaroos.  Reptile species and many other wild animals flourish in the rough country of the Australian Outback as well.

A major percentage of the native Aboriginal population lives in the outback, along with squatters, bushrangers, and swagmen.  This hearty bunch represents less than ten percent of the overall Australian population, as ninety percent of Australians live in or near major urban areas in proximity to the coast.

The “Never-Never” is Australian terminology for the farthest reaches of the Australian Outback, while the term “back-country” generally applies to any areas beyond the settled population centers.

Many feral animals not native to the Australian Outback such as foxes, rabbits, pigs, cats, and even camels are often found roaming the countryside.  These species, however, are considered interlopers and degraders of the natural environment.   Former station horses gone wild, called “brumbies” are present in the Australian Outback regions as well.

Folks on holiday will do well to consider visiting some of the most popular Australian Outback locations such as Alice Springs, Coober Pedy, Katherine Gorge, MacDonnell Ranges, Monkey Mia, Ayers Rock, Willandra Lakes, Tennant Creek, and others.

Most visitors to the Australian Outback find it best to drive or go with a tour group.  Many remote areas are easily accessible via main routes, but in deeper areas extensive planning for equipment, supplies, and rough terrain vehicles must be undertaken.  When exploring deep into the Australian Outback it is best to consider an experienced guide or frequent adventurer to join you.
